Hurricane (Year 5)

Spring Term 2017 topic

London

The title of the topic will link together different aspects of London: the history of the city, the buildings – both old and new as well as some famous people and characters that have lived there.  As part of our topic, we are planning a trip to London to learn more about the construction of some of those magnificent buildings!

We will be starting our new English Learning Journey with a look at the Charles Dickens classic – Great Expectations.  This will help us to visualise the contrast between the richer and poorer areas of London, and give us the opportunity to investigate how different characters are portrayed through their speech, appearance and actions.   Reading will continue to look at the structure and language of different text types – we will think about how questions about texts are structured and the responses that are needed in order to answer these correctly.

Maths this term will begin with securing methods of division and ensuring that we have a solid understanding of the relationship between multiplication and division.  We shall also look at fractions and decimal numbers and the relationships between them.

Our science topic will be Properties of Materials – this will be launched by a Science ‘mini-topic’ at the start of the term – three full days of science and science related Maths and English that will really give us a chance to develop our Scientific Skills!  After that, these skills will be used to plan investigations into different types of Forces and the effects they have.

We shall also continue to work alongside Chichester District Council on ‘Ideas Into Action’ – working with members of the community to really get our ‘Ideas into Action’!
